A reserve for the protection of dolphin habitat has been established in Shoal Bay as part of the environmental offset conditions for the East Arm Wharf expansion. The establishment of a reserve will protect the habitat area from future development within the 50 hectare boundary.

Darwin Harbour is home to:

• three species of coastal dolphin
• other marine megafauna frequent the area including:
  • dugongs
  • four species of marine turtles (Green, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill and Flatback).

Fishing, boating and other recreational activities is not affected or restricted.

Signage has been installed to increase public awareness about marine megafauna in the Top End at the following boat ramps:

• Buffalo Creek
• East Arm
• Dinah Beach
• Nightcliff.
